What is the permit, why we need it?

As Tibet Autonomous region (TAR) is the frontier of People’s Republic of China in Himalayan region and bordering quite a few countries, It is restricted for free exploring for both Chinese and foreign nationals. Chinese people are generally hassle-free to enter TAR, but still need to apply the permit for going to the border regions. For foreign nationals, there are 3 different permits are necessity to carry out the whole trip across Tibet.

1.
Tibet Entry Permit – It’s used to enter Lhasa.
2. Aliens Travel Permit – To go further outside of Lhasa.
3.Military permit - To go to some border regions such like Ali (for Mt.Kalish and Guge kingdom ruins)

Without the 3 permits mentioned above, to travel in Tibet is illegal and is also regarded as against the law and local authority, the monetary penalty and political inspection can apply.

I heard that it was ok to travel in Tibet independently?

It had been possible to travel in Tibet independently for many years until the riot occurred on 14th of March in 2008. Actually it was still illegal during those “open” years, only because the tourism greatly boosts the regional economy, the local authority didn’t strictly enforce the rules for foreign travelers, and so do the travel agencies who even issued the “false itinerary permit” to foreign travelers as the permit was not seriously checked.

Since the situation changed from last year, the regional stability has become the top concern for central government, all the rules start enforced again in TAR. At moment, all the foreign nationals have to travel in Tibet with the fixed itinerary and a guide accompanied, this makes the travel not as flexible as in the past.

How the travel arrangement work out now?

1. No matter you are alone or in a group, you can apply the permit. In order to apply the permit, you have to decide a specified itinerary with fixed entry date and departure date.

2. Once we get all the necessary documents (your passport, visa copy and specified itinerary), we’ll directly contact the tour operator in Lhasa.

3.Tour operator in Lhasa will deliver your documents to TTB (Tibet Tourism Bureau), once it gets verified, a “Tibet Entry Permit” will be issued, and send to the hostel by courier. (If you take the train to Lhasa, a photo copy of original permit will be faxed to the hostel) The tour operator who applied the permit for you will take the responsibility to carry out your itinerary while you are traveling in Tibet.

4. Book Air or train ticket with your permit.

5. Our job is finished, the rest of your journey will be carried out by local tour operator, a Tibetan English-speaking guide will accompany you until you exit TAR. But we’ll still provide the assistance when there is anything happened while you are traveling in Tibet.

Why to arrange your trip through us?

After the Tibet completely closed to individual travelers, many travel agencies came up to rip the tourists off by quoting sky-high price, many travelers had to give up a visit to Tibet due to the unaffordable price, so we started to look for the solution to decrease the cost. After several negotiations with local tour operators in Lhasa, we think we’ve now got the best deal for our guests, and we vow to be the cheapest. If you found anywhere offer the cheaper quotation than us, please don’t hesitate to tell us, we’ll try to find the reason!

Anyway, we just don’t want you lose the great chance to see this most beautiful land on top of the world!
